Profile of Dr. Udo Schirmer

Dr. Udo Schirmer

Dr Udo Schirmer was born in 1930 at Potsdam near Berlin. In 1936 he became a pupil in a two-form-school in Upper Silesia, the homeland of his parents, until 1940 when his family moved to Poznan. He attended a secondary school there and grew up in the Red Cross military hospital managed by his parents until the end of World War II. He then decided to become a physician.

After the war and some years after reaching A-level at secondary school and after some long financial hindrances he began to study medicine at Göttingen University in 1959. After graduation he worked in different medical specialities from obstetrics to geriatrics until 1970 and he, his wife and his son settled in the open country.

Ten years later he conferred a doctor's degree in medicine at the Hannover Medical School and he has been a lecturer for general practice there since. His message to students is that each patient needs one doctor who knows all about her or him and her or his family no less than other specialists. He uses creative and innovative methods in his teachings. That means he designs his lectures to be interesting both for future specialists and future General Practioners (GP).

His present activities at Hannover Medical School include organizing seminars and lecturing on GP. At home he runs a GP surgery.

His general guideline for all activities is “Unity in Diversity”.
